The Wolf

An old man lived with his wife. They had five sheep, a stallion as the sixth animal, and a heifer as the seventh. A wolf came to them and began to sing:

The old woman said to her husband:

“Oh, what a lovely song! Old man, give him a sheep.”

The old man gave him one. The wolf ate it and came back with the same song. He kept coming and singing it until he had eaten the sheep, the stallion, the heifer, and the old woman. The old man was left alone, and the wolf came to him with the song too. The old man took a poker and began beating the wolf with it. The wolf ran away and never set foot at the old man’s home again. The poor old man was left to bear his sorrow alone.
