Once there was a woodpecker who lived in an oak tree. The woodpecker made a little nest, laid three eggs, and hatched three chicks. A fox began coming to him; thump-thump went her great tail against the green oak:
— Woodpecker, Woodpecker! Come down from the oak. I need the oak—to bend sechikhichiki (?).
— Oh, Fox! You have not let me hatch even one little chick.
— Oh, Woodpecker! Throw one down to me, and I will teach him the blacksmith's trade.
The woodpecker threw one down to her. She went past bush after bush, wood after wood, and then ate the chick.
Again the fox came to the woodpecker, and thump-thump went her great tail against the green oak:
— Woodpecker, Woodpecker! Come down from the oak. I need the oak—to bend sechikhichiki.
— Oh, Fox! You have not let me hatch even one little chick.
— Oh, Woodpecker! Throw one down to me, and I will teach him the shoemaker's trade.
Throw one down to me, and I will teach him the tailor's trade.
The woodpecker threw one down to her. She went past bush after bush, wood after wood, and then ate the chick.
