The Beliyanki refused:

“We are mushroom ladies of noble rank; we are not going to war.”

“Come, Ryzhiki, join me in the war.”

The Ryzhiki refused:

“We are wealthy peasants; we are not obliged to go to war.”

“Come, Volnushki, join me in the war.”

The Volnushki refused:

“We are the gentry’s cooks; we are not going to war.”

“Come, Opyonki, join me in the war.”

The Opyonki refused:

“Our legs are much too thin; we are not going to war.”

“Come, Gruzdi, join me in the war.”

“We Gruzdi are a band of friendly lads. We will go to war!”

That was when Tsar Gorokh was waging war against the mushrooms.
